The Importance of Taste & Craft

designcraftquality

Many people have spoken on this topic, time and time again. I'd implore you to explore those resources if you don't already think these two things are important in building products.

A few threads stand out:

  1. Abundance/Scarcity

In a world of scarcity, we treasure tools. In a world of abundance, we treasure taste

Which section of the cycle are we in? It dictates how businesses evaluate their actions. The macroeconomics of business investment along with the success metrics of your own projects will continue to add and subtract value to concepts of taste and craft.

Unfortunately, it's extremely difficult to play catch-up with these concepts at scale, you can try to advocate within your organization, but without the right understanding of the environment you're playing in, this can be difficult.

  2. Quality is the foundation of successful products

Is this true historically? You can easily attribute perceived quality to the success of numerous marketing led companies. It's possible that the cycle we are in lends itself to overvaluing quality in products.

  3. je ne sais quoi

I still find it difficult to articulate a lot of the qualities that attribute to taste and craft. Quality is simply easier to define and reason for. Which I think means we simply don't have the concepts and vocabulary to articulate what makes special products special.

  4. How did we get here, soulless?

The single best thing we can do as designers is continuing to knock on the door business decisions with arguments for value and taste. Oftentimes you'll need to speak their language on key long term concepts, such as projected revenue growth.
